This is a great framework for entrepreneurs to keep in mind, particularly PurplePath behaviors, as they are building their web applications. The grid was developed by BJ Fogg from Standford’s Persuasive Technology Lab and outlines 15 ways behaviors can change using different psychological strategies and persuasive techniques.
Putting the Behavior Grid into practice looks something like this…
- Identify your target behavior type
- Identify how your target behavior gets triggered (is the target behavior on “Cue” or on “Cycle”?)
- Test to see if your target behavior creates an obligation “Echo Behavior” vs. a transient transaction “Dot Behavior”
- Refine product & design strategy to maximise #3
Incidentally the research lab has also developed a Behavior Wizard which helps you classify the type of behavior you are trying to change.
